Portable Antiquities Scheme
Conservation Services treats objects found by metal detectorists which have been reported under the
Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS). The PAS encourages reporting of all antiquities found through
casual discovery by metal detectorists, building contractors and the general public. This is
a National scheme funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund where finds are recorded and entered onto
an internet accessible database for reference and research. To find your local Finds Liason
Officer (FLO) see our Links page.
While the reporting of antiquities under the PAS is purely voluntary, items which may qualify as
Treasure under the Treasure Act 1996 should be reported to the local Coroner within 14 days of
discovery. If in doubt consult your local Museum, Archaeology Service, Conservation Services or
your Portable Antiquities Scheme Finds Liason Officer.
